Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) scheme originated by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) visit
In recognition of the importance of acquisition of knowledge in both the formal and informal feedback ways, all the companies put a heavy emphasis on ship visits by shore management. While technical people, such as vessel superintendents, are required in most cases to visit the ships, The European Training Center went even further with a requirement for all candidates in this program to visit the ships regularly.
Such visits are a requirement under the Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) scheme originated by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF).
Such candidates' visits to the ships are primarily a scanning or familiarization mechanism for operational and safety information, but also is intended to help create a comfort zone with the crew to encourage the uninhibited disclosure of risk information.
Emphasis on the theory underlying the analysis. Hydrostatic loading, shear load and bending moment, and resulting primary hull primary stresses will be developed. Topics covered and experienced (live) are ship structural design concepts, effect of superstructures and dissimilar materials on primary strength, transverse shear stresses in the hull girder, and torsional strength among others. Failure mechanisms and design limit states were developed for plate bending, column and panel buckling, panel ultimate strength, and plastic analysis. Matrix stiffness, grillage, and finite element analysis were introduced. Design of a ship structure was analyzed by "hand" with desktop computer tools and a final design project using current applications for structural design of a section will be accomplished.
